The novel is really nearly there

NotebookWord count: 88,405

All right, I know I said the last The Dragons of Bloodrock post was the penultimate one, but I just had to slip in this extra announcement to share my excitement that I’m three chapters off the end. Three chapters! With good luck and a following wind, that means I’ll hit my original target of finishing the first draft by the end of August.

As predicted, writing these past few chapters got a bit messy. But it’s a good mess. The story does actually seem to function, with all the various moving parts meshing together in a satisfying way. The machinery needs a hell of a lot of oil, and there are some rough edges that need filing down … and I must do something about that dreadful clunking sound … but for the most part it works. Lots of loose ends to tie up in the second draft, not to mention a couple of gaping holes to fill, but that’s the fun part.

And that’s all I wanted to say. Keep listening out for champagne corks popping when I finally write The End. Then I just need to resist the urge to drive at high speed through deep snow and crash my car while carrying the only copy of the manuscript. You never know when a crazy fan might dig you out, take you hostage and break your legs …

Congrats on being almost done. I always dread the second draft. That’s when I first find out what I actually wrote, vs. what I thought I wrote.

  2. Congrat’s, man; I hope it does really well for you ! Open up the champagne ! *toasts*

  3. Hooray! I’m looking forward to reading the novel, I’m sure it will be just as fantastic as the others!

  4. Thanks for all the support, folks – it means a lot to me. The rewriting is actually my favourite part, so I’m looking forward to it. If you’re very good, I’ll treat you to an extract from the completed first draft soon …
