VIEW 2021 – Baobab Studios, “Bombay Rose” and the 93rd Academy Awards

View Conference

VIEW Conference just unveiled its latest round of PreVIEW events for 2021. Each online session is free to attend, and features conversation with a team of animation professionals as they debate the hottest topics and share insights about their latest projects.

“In the middle of January, we held our first PreVIEW session of 2021. We brought together the directors of Netflix’s first three animated shorts – Canvas, If Anything Happens I Love You and Cops and Robbers – and the results were epic, with record numbers of people attending. Now, we are building on that success by lining up a fantastic programme of free online events for the spring, summer and beyond, building excitement ready for VIEW Conference in October.”

Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez, director of VIEW Conference

On January 30, 2021, VIEW presents Baobab Studios at 5: Innovations in Animated Storytelling. Join the leadership team behind this six-time Emmy Award-winning animation studio as Baobab’s CEO and co-founder Maureen Fan, CCO and co-founder Eric Darnell, CTO and co-founder Larry Cutler and head of content Kane Lee discuss their first five years creating the next generation of real-time animated stories. They’ll discuss what’s next, including a slate of original new projects for premium streaming signed in the past year.

The team also talks about their latest animated experience, Baba Yaga, a VR exploration of the classic Eastern European legend. Rendered using a range of visual styles – including illustrative 2D pop-up, hand-drawn and stop-motion animation – Baba Yaga enhances interactivity through a dynamic AI that places participants at the heart of the story.

In our third PreVIEW session of the year, self-taught animator and filmmaker Gitanjali Rao speaks about her debut animated feature Bombay Rose, an award-winning festival favourite that took two years to complete at PaperBoat Animation Studios. Meticulously painted frame-by-frame and based on true events, Bombay Rose tells the story of Kamala, a young dancer living on the streets of Bombay. The film follows Kamala as she balances the needs of her family with her own dreams of finding love with Salim, a Kashmiri orphan, and combines a documentary approach to urban reality with a vibrant and colourful dream world.
