This website has expanded organically over the years. Some might say chaotically. Like a much-loved but ill-tended garden, it’s sprouted all kinds of weird and wonderful fauna, resulting in a dense tangle of vegetation that’s become increasingly difficult to manage, much less navigate.
So, I’ve done a little pruning. First, I scrambled back through all my old blog posts and snipped out everything that had withered on the vine. Then, I streamlined navigation by sorting everything that remained into neat categories and simplifying the top menu.
I’ve also introduced a new feature, which I’ve boldly called Advice for Writers. Honestly, I’m not sure how qualified I am to dispense advice, but I’ve been writing professionally for nearly thirty years, so I guess I must have picked up a few tips along the way. I hesitate to call it ‘wisdom’ since, much like Indiana Jones, I’m mostly making this up as I go.
Under this new category, you’ll find everything from musings about my life as a writer, to essays on style, technique, plotting, character, motivation … you name it. For a week-by-week record of my experience of writing a novel to order, read my Ghostwriter Diaries. To explore the lighter side of life as a writer, try my ever-expanding encyclopedia of Reasons to Write. If you’re interested in the details of my journey as an author, read my ongoing autobiography The Many Lives of a Writer.
Everything else on the website is more or less unchanged. You’ll still find plenty of information here about my novels and short stories. You can dig into my archive of articles about Cinefex, or explore my more recent movie-related articles under the umbrella of The Illusion Almanac.
Whatever you do while visiting my little online oasis, I hope you enjoy it!
