On the east side of String City stands a line of power plants operated by Carr Industries. These provide the metropolis with much of its power, and pump enough pollution into the atmosphere to keep The Carr Air Cleansing Company not only in business, but turning a healthy profit.
Nobody knows exactly what Theo Carr, the city’s electricity mogul, burns inside his furnaces. Local residents claim that high-pitched shrieks that can be heard echoing through the east side after nightfall, and that anyone who lingers in the shadow of the cooling towers for longer than fifteen minutes will end up glowing in the dark.
