We just sent Cinefex 163 out into the world – hurray! Our February 2019 issue leads with Joe Fordham’s spectacular article on Alita: Battle Angel; Joe also delivers ground-shaking coverage of Mortal Engines, while the practically perfect Jody Duncan whisks you magically behind the scenes on Mary Poppins Returns.
My contribution to Cinefex 163 is a super-sized report on the making of Bumblebee. Full disclosure – my personal interest in the Transformers franchise waned roughly halfway through the first film. So, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this latest outing for the shapeshifting robots goes back to basics, with the metal-crunching action balanced nicely with a heartwarming girl-and-her-robot-buddy story.
I interviewed the talented visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic, led by the always-enthusiastic Jason Smith, not to mention special effects supervisor Scott Fisher and the guys at Cantina Creative. I also had the pleasure of interviewing director Travis Knight, better known for his pioneering work as founder of the stop-motion studio LAIKA, creators of Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings and many other animated features. He’s a smart, sensitive fellow, and the article is all the richer for having his voice at its heart.
Cinefex 163 is on newsstands now, and available to order at our online store. If you’re a subscriber, your copy is already powering towards your mailbox. And don’t forget our iPad edition, out soon, featuring tons more photographs and exclusive video content.
