“Dragonflame” – New Edition Out Now

Dragonflame by Graham Edwards

Today I’m celebrating the publication of a brand new edition of Dragonflame, the final novel in The Ultimate Dragon Saga trilogy. First published by HarperCollins in 1997, this epic fantasy adventure is now available from Amazon worldwide in paperback and for Kindle.

Dragonflame concludes the adventures of Fortune, Cumber and the rest of the dragons introduced in my first novel, Dragoncharm. This new edition is a significant milestone for me, marking as it does the completion of a 10-year project to republish my first six novels, originally published by HarperCollins between 1995-2001.

Dragonflame was nominated for Best Novel in the 1997 British Fantasy Society Awards. Here’s the blurb:

Before man, there was magic. And where there was magic, there were dragons.

Fortune’s daughter, Aria, has been trapped by the sinister Cult of the Last Circle. Under the guidance of Scarn, the Cult’s evil leader, Aria learns to worship the Flame and renounce the dragon gift of flight. Meanwhile, the wingless dragon Wyrm sets out on an epic quest to solve the riddle of the Last Circle – and his own uncertain destiny.

But a new day is coming, the long-awaited day of creation, when what’s left of the world’s charm will be swept away at last. Caught up in the final death throes of magic are Fortune, Gossamer and the very last survivors of the dragon race. What place can there be for dragons in a world that no longer wants them?

About the new edition

The text for the new edition of Dragonflame is more or less identical to the original HarperCollins paperback, with just a few minor tweaks for clarity and continuity. It also includes a new afterword. Here’s an extract:

As the last book of the trilogy I began with Dragoncharm in 1995, Dragonflame represents an ending. It brings the story of Fortune and his companions to an end, and completes the chain of seismic cosmic events that begins with the Turning of the World and ends with the Lighting of the Sky.

Of course, most endings are merely stepping stones to new beginnings, and Dragonflame is no exception. When I began writing the novel in 1996, I already knew what my next project was going to be, having just signed a contract with HarperCollins for a new fantasy trilogy in which a Victorian explorer called Jonah Lightfoot is transported to a parallel reality dominated by an apparently infinite wall. On this world-wall he finds many wonders … including, you guessed it, dragons.

Stone & Sky, the first book in this my second fantasy trilogy, is not dragon-centric in the manner of Dragoncharm and its sequels. But the dragons in it are very much part of the Dragoncharm universe. No surprise, then, that Dragonflame contains clues that lead directly into Stone & Sky. The mysterious vertical realm glimpsed towards the end of this book is the same world to which Jonah Lightfoot eventually makes his way. And Stone & Sky’s chief villain is none other than Archan, the sinister dragon left immortal but incorporeal at the end of Dragonstorm.

When I finished work on Dragonflame, I swore it would be the last book of its kind that I would write. Never say never. In 2020, I published The Dragons of Bloodrock, a novel set many years before Dragoncharm that follows the adventures of a whole new cast of dragon characters on the far side of the world. If you think that sounds like a prequel, you’d be right … sort of. If you read The Dragons of Bloodrock, you’ll find it explores the subject of magical time travel in a way that turns everything you know about dragons on its head.
